Soke Inoue Yoshimi - "Kata is martial art" - Conclusion Seminar Italy 2013
Soke Inoue Yoshimi, Rika Usami's legendary master, concludes his seminar in Italy by reminding us about some fundamental principles of Karate. All katas are different, however the basic concepts of movement remain valid across all styles of Karate. We should always avoid being stiff and training with our mouth closed. Muscles should always be relaxed and we should "expand" our attacks (i.e., not contract our muscles at the end of techniques) to maximise their effectiveness. In a self-defence situation, there is no room for mistakes: if our techniques are not effective in causing damage to the opponent, then we expose ourselves to the risk of being attacked. We should not forget that "Kata is martial art".

Soke Inoue Yoshimi, Rika Usami's legendary master, explains how to improve "kime" (sudden fixation of a technique) when performing a tsuki (punch). When executing a tsuki, the arm should be let go, i.e. the antagonist muscles should not be contracted to stop the punch and fixate the technique. Instead, these muscles should be relaxed and the kime should be generated by the sudden stop of the bo...

His demonstrations of these Shito-Ruy katas are absolutely convincing. And tell how difficult it is to perform all movements correctly. With power and precision. Pure art and skill. Although bunkai applications make sense, most of them have no use in real self defense and fighting situations, like in street fight. But its good to keep alive this great karate tradition. By kata competitions and in training dojos. When training karate, everyone learn a lot. Of themselves too. And some discipline too, although nowadays it need to be teached differently than before.

His hip use, extension and power production, is great to watch. And learn too. This is a very nice classical kata, with one leg stances from the roots of Okinawan karate. Shito ryu style has many good katas in their repertoire.
